How to Clean Out an Ottawa Garage Before Moving Day

Garages often become the last room addressed before a move. They hold seasonal equipment, half-finished projects, furniture that never made it back inside and boxes that have already survived one address change. When the moving date gets close, that mixture creates slow decisions at exactly the wrong time.

A useful garage cleanout is not simply a matter of throwing everything into a truck. The work goes faster when you separate decisions from lifting, keep a clear route to the driveway and remove ordinary non-hazardous items before the movers, cleaners or photographer need the space. Start with the move date and work backward

Write down the fixed events first: moving day, listing photographs, a pre-closing visit, key handover or the arrival of a cleaning crew. The garage should be sorted before the removal appointment, and the removal should be completed early enough that you can sweep, check shelves and recover anything that was placed in the wrong pile.

• Choose a final decision day for anything still in the garage.

Do not create extra work on removal day

Loose contents take longer to assess and handle than contained items. Empty drawers unless the removal team has agreed otherwise, close boxes that are ready to go and keep reusable bins with the belongings you are moving. Do not overload boxes simply to reduce their number; a manageable box is safer and easier to place.

If furniture needs to be dismantled, confirm that in advance. Take photos of complicated assemblies before taking them apart and keep the hardware with the piece. Leave enough floor space to work without blocking the exit.

Finish the garage for the next task

Once the selected items are gone, check behind shelving, along the overhead-door track and around the interior door. Recover keys, documents, small tools and hardware before sweeping. If the property is being listed or handed over, remove temporary sorting boxes and leave the centre of the floor clear so the garage reads as usable space.
